Feeling into the right fit

More than anything else, rightness of fit can impact your therapeutic comfort and your progress toward your therapeutic goals. Some questions to ask yourself as you embark on a search for the right counsellor are:

Does this person feel easy to talk to?

Am I feeling safe enough as I share what brings me to therapy?

Does this person feel steady and seem comfortable hearing what I’m sharing with them?

Do I like what I hear when they share with me about their background or approach with clients?

Do I feel informed about what to expect as a new client?

Remember that there is no obligation to work with a particular therapist. If after one session, or three, or fifty you feel like something needs shifting, your therapist is trained to be responsive and attune to that (and shift with your needs) or acknowledge when they may no longer be the best resource and support you in connecting with resources that are a better fit for your shifting needs.

It’s optimal if we can share these feelings with our therapist and/or be supported to say goodbye when the time comes. Therapy is relational and you matter to the person who’s been working with you!
